TAI: Strengthening Community Philanthropy Across Tanzania

TAI’s journey in community philanthropy began at the 2019 “Shift the Power” symposium by the Global Fund for Community Foundations (GFCF) and was strengthened through its 2023 membership in the African Philanthropy Network (APN). These experiences deepened TAI’s belief in community-led change and inspired collaborations with organizations such as ZGF, KCDF, Tillitonse Foundation, Kilimani Project Foundation, and GFCF. Building on this, TAI researched the state of community philanthropy in Shinyanga, becoming a national champion of this approach and working with local partners like WYDS, OPE, COWOSE, YWL, TEI, Fikra Mpya, and Agape ACP to implement projects that harness local resources and leadership. Over the past five years, TAI has mobilized USD 180,880—USD 150,000 from the Firelight Foundation, USD 15,000 from GFCF, and USD 15,880 in community in-kind contributions—empowering community-based organizations to deliver transformative initiatives and strengthen local capacity to address their own challenges.

Ending Child Marriages, Effect Of Covid 19, Adressing Stunting.

Through the Thubutu Fund, TAI has supported several community-based organizations (CBOs) in Shinyanga, including YWL, Mkombozi CBO, PWWCO, Fikra Mpya, TEI, Lubaga Primary School, and COWOSE—showcasing the power of local action in driving social and environmental change. These grassroots groups address issues such as ending child marriage, improving access to education, mitigating COVID-19’s socio-economic impacts, and reducing child stunting through better nutrition. They also advance sustainability by promoting community philanthropy, resource mobilization, and environmental initiatives like tree planting and climate justice. Together, their efforts demonstrate the transformative potential of Tanzanian-led solutions to foster gender equality, resilience, and environmental stewardship. Building on this success, the Thubutu Fund aims to expand its reach and scale up support for more CBOs nationwide, deepening social impact and advancing sustainable, community-driven development across Tanzania.

Climate Change and Environmental Social Justice

Protecting Our Planet, Preserving Our Future

TAI champions climate justice by empowering local communities—those most affected yet least responsible for climate change—to adapt, mitigate, and lead environmental protection efforts. Recognizing the overexploitation of natural resources and its threat to future generations, TAI works to rescue, regenerate, and safeguard ecosystems while ensuring communities remain central to sustainable solutions. Its approach includes restoring local biomes, promoting renewable energy like solar power for off-grid areas, supporting climate-resilient farming and irrigation, and leading a campaign to plant one million trees across Tanzania within five years. Through these efforts, communities are not just coping with environmental challenges but driving lasting, sustainable change. To scale this impact, TAI seeks USD 500,000 over the next three years to advance community-led environmental protection and climate justice nationwide.
