Afya Yangu Mama na Mtoto: Building Healthier Futures for Women, Youth, and Children—Together.

The Afya Yangu Mama na Mtoto initiative (2022–2027) aims to improve the health and well-being of women, youth, and children in 11 regions of Tanzania, with a focus on Shinyanga, Kaliua, and Igunga. By expanding access to quality RMNCAH services and promoting healthy behaviors, the project empowers communities to take charge of their health. Implemented through a community-owned model, TAI uses Social and Behaviour Change Communication (SBCC) and a network of over 360 locally based Community Health Workers who deliver education, referrals, and essential care at the household level. Initially funded by USAID, the program now faces a funding gap due to shifting U.S. priorities. TAI is seeking partners to sustain and expand this proven, community-driven model that strengthens health systems and safeguards the lives of women, youth, and children across Tanzania.

TAI implements the following interventions to reach the project goal:

SOCIAL BEHAVIOR CHANGE (SBC)

Delivered by Community Health Workers, this intervention promotes maternal and child health through targeted outreach encouraging ANC, facility delivery, PNC, family planning, vaccination, care seeking, and child nutrition.

ADOLESCENT SEXUAL REPRODUCTIVE HEALTH (ASRH)

This intervention targets in- and out-of-school youth aged 15–24 with ASRH education through clubs led by Girls Mentors and Youth Health Champions, followed by referrals to health facilities for family planning and STI/HIV prevention.

GENDER AND RESPECTIVE CARE (GRC)

The intervention addresses harmful gender norms limiting access to RMNCAH services through couple dialogues led by trained CHWs and advocacy with community leaders to promote supportive social change.

COMMUNITY SCORE CARD (CSC)

These meetings identify barriers to RMNCAH service use in low-performing villages, promote health staff accountability, and engage communities in assessing and improving service quality through guided discussions and joint action planning.
